Do people in the UK tend to send birth announcements when a baby is born? My MIL freaked when I planned on sending wedding announcements because apparently they don't do that there. I don't want to commit a faux pas.

British folks tend not to send anything out in the mail, but my French friends always have done. As for me my American husband refused to let me send out baby announcements to our relatives on either side of the pond, or channel! Bah humbug!
The British idea of an announcement, birth, death, marriage etc,is usually to put it in the local paper or one of the nationals if you're extremely posh!

Not so much, no. Like belle_marmotte said, we generally don't tend to send very much in the mail at all. If someone is close enough to need to know that such a big change is occurring, then we generally call them or drop by for tea. That said, I wouldn't have been offended or upset in the slightest if someone did send an announcement in the post instead.
